Guided by the iconic Cutmaster Dc lyric “Hey good lookin’, you know you gotta be from Brooklyn,” the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Brooklyn) has selected nine winners of its 2022 Brooklyn Design Awards.

To qualify for an award, projects had to be located in Brooklyn or completed by Brooklyn-based architects or designers. Almost half of the projects are in the borough, and the rest are as near as Montauk and as far away as North Carolina and the Philippines. Each entry was judged on overall design, innovation, environmental sustainability, social impact, and technical skill.

The five-person jury included The Van Alen Institute Senior Project Manager Diana Araujo; Carnegie Mellon University Paul Mellon Chair Vivian Loftness; Studio Gang New York Design Director Arthur Liu; FX Collaborative Director of Sustainability Daniel Piselli; and ZH Architects Founder and Partner Stas Zakrzewski. The Brooklyn AIA chose architects and designers whose work focuses on sustainability to judge the entries.

“Brooklyn is a hotbed of culture, industry, creativity, and ingenuity,” said Jason Boutin, the 2022 Brooklyn Design Awards Committee Chair and partner at The Brooklyn Studio, in a statement. “Today, it is one of the best-known place names in the  world and this program is proud to celebrate those Brooklyn architects driven by the values of the borough.”

The jury awarded projects in Excellence, Merit, and Commendation categories. Check out the nine winners below:
